Forcing House

11" x 11" 2014
UNTITLED (PULSE COMPOSITION). Enamel, oil paint, oil stick, pencil, collage on newspaper.
11" x 11" 2014.
I'm putting together some collages for a show in January which are loosely based around a Theodore Roethke poem, Forcing House, from a collection of poems from 1948- THE LOST SON AND OTHER POEMS.
FORCING HOUSE
Vines tougher than wrists
And rubbery shoots,
Scums, mildews, smuts along stems,
Great cannas or delicate cyclamen tips,-
All pulse with the knocking pipes
That drip and sweat,
Sweat and drip,
Swelling the roots with steam and stench,
Shooting up lime and dung and ground bones,-
Fifty summers in motion at once,
As the live heat billows from pipes and pots.
Theodore Roethke.

DRIP, DROP, DROPS
Before settling into prolonged painting sessions, I have been working materials onto fragments of paper that I consider to be drawings. There is usually collage elements that come into play that more often than not are used as a method to edit sections of the drawings and further activate the ground. Even though a good deal of paint is used in these drawings, the paint registers as having been used as a medium/tool for drawing. These exercise drawings explore play and invention with the material that allow for me to have play and be inventive in the paintings. They limber me up for an activity of spontaneity and unhindered explorations with paint.
*all drawings are oil paint, pencil, oil stick, ink, collage on newsprint.

Drawing/October 7th with a poem by, Roethke
THE SIGNALS
Often I meet, on walking from a door,
A flash of objects never seen before.
As known particulars come wheeling by,
They dart across a corner of the eye.
They flicker faster than a blue-tailed swift,
Or when dark follows dark in lightning rift.
They slip between the fingers of my sight.
I cannot put my glance upon them tight.
Sometimes the blood is privileged to guess
The things the eye or hand cannot possess.
